After a great few days in Munich, it was time to say goodbye. Our driver Henry drove us to Munich, where he dropped us off at Terminal 1. The terminal looks nice enough from the outside, with a semi-enclosed driveway containing lots of natural light.

My father and I arrived at Haikou Airport’s international terminal after spending fifteen minutes trying to explain to our taxi driver that Cathay Dragon was an airline from Hong Kong and there was a separate terminal for Hong Kong departures.

There was no one in the priority line and we checked in quickly. The slightly cold agent also informed us of our upgrade to Business Class due to overbooking in Economy. We were then sent on our way through Haikou Airport’s confusing airport security process.

Our Qatar Airways flight let out directly into the departures area, which I wasn’t expecting. We found ourselves following signage directly to the A gates.

Soon we found ourselves in Doha Airport’s impressive atrium, housing the 6.8-million-dollar teddy bear. From there we started spotting signage towards Qatar Airways’ Al Mourjan business class lounge, which I followed (my parents wanted to do some duty-free shopping, so I figured I might as well take a photo or 93, and we’d meet up after).

Since Imperial College took care of my transfer to the airport, I was on campus until 5 PM, where I was bussed to the airport. My friend Albert was returning to Incheon, and his Asiana flight experienced a mechanical and was delayed until the next morning, which set us back a little bit. Asiana arranged a room at the Sofitel London Heathrow for him, which he said he enjoyed. Meanwhile, my friend Mohini ended up on the same flight as me, coincidentally also in premium economy.

We checked in at Heathrow’s Virgin Atlantic wing at around 6 PM, which was quick and painless. I originally wanted to select a bulkhead on the flight, mainly so I could review it, though the check-in agent was only able to put a request on my booking so I could vouch for a bulkhead at the gate. For the record, seat 21G was open on ExpertFlyer, though I couldn’t select it on Virgin Atlantic’s website. Seats 21A, 21D and 21E were shown as blocked (which means they weren’t taken, or else they’d be showing as occupied). She explained the boarding time, and since I also asked her about accessing the Clubhouse, she said that if I managed to get in the lounge, boarding would be called from inside the lounge.

Once I left the Concourse A lounge I tried to make my way to Concourse C, as I wanted to check out the Air Canada lounge. I got rather lost along the way (partly because I was so tired), so I decided to just leave it and head straight to concourse Z.

To my surprise, there wasn’t a line for immigration at all. I assumed it was just a checkpoint, but apart from the agent being quite rude and talking to the agent manning the counter next to her while she helped with my procedures (not that I blame her, it was 8:20 PM so she must have had a long day), I was through in under five minutes. On one hand I was bummed as I could have visited the Air Canada lounge with time to spare, but on the other hand I was ready to get some work done at the Lufthansa lounge.

While no means one of my favourite concourses, the Z Concourse at Frankfurt Airport looked decent and seemed more modern than Heathrow Airport.

Upon deplaning my flight from Geneva I headed towards the signage for the Z gates, where I knew my flight would be departing from. Along the way, I saw signage for a Concourse A Lufthansa lounge, so I thought it wouldn’t hurt if I paid it a visit.

It was my first time in Frankfurt Airport, so I’m not quite sure how to get to the lounge if you’re departing on an international flight with a business class ticket, but if you’re a Star Gold member departing on a Star Alliance flight or have a Star Alliance business class ticket at hand, you’ll be able to access the lounge. I’m not sure about the regulations if you’re leaving from Frankfurt with a business class ticket, though, as you don’t need to clear security to enter the lounge.

Anyway, I decided to visit the lounge, so gave my boarding pass to the lounge attendant. The lounge attendant stated that there was a “much nicer” lounge by the Z gates, though I still expressed interest in visiting the lounge. She said, “ah, to tour around?” I said “yeah”. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to grab a picture of the lounge entrance.

Near the entrance was some bar seating that was unoccupied throughout my short stay.

On our last day around the area, we took a van from Courchevel to Geneva’s city center, where my parents, the children traveling with us and I all got to buy our hearts content (if you’re wondering what I got, there’s a great chocolatier based in Geneva). We decided to head towards the airport at 3:00 PM for our 6:20 PM flight, and got there at around 3:30 PM.

Wow, Geneva Airport is a dump. We did our tax-free procedures for our French goods with the help of some staff at the Swiss ticketing center, which required going over to the French side of the airport, then back to the Swiss side.

I’ve explained the shenanigans we’ve had with online check-in before, so I won’t beat a dead horse – but check-in was straightforward, and Hailey was given seat 7A.

I’ve been terrible with trip report speeds lately, despite having all the photos uploaded. I’ll make sure that each post is coming every two days from hereon out, so I can actually start powering through my work next week (I do still have an assignment that’s overdue and a chemistry test tomorrow, but the former can be dealt with and I’m mostly ready for the latter). So yeah, here’s my apology. Here we go…

The walk to Terminal A was surprisingly fast given my mom’s descriptions. I caught up with my family immediately, as I’d assumed it was quite a hike, and started running as fast as I could. I’m not sure how fast the rest of the group was walking at this point, but the immigration point for transiting passengers couldn’t have been more than 200m from the immigration point for passengers departing Zurich. At this point some of my friends realised they wouldn’t be able to make the 7 AM flight (they booked through a travel agency, so that’s a shame), so I made sure to get them rebooked on our flight.

I appreciated the extra time, though – while I thought I’d visited a combined business class/Senator lounge last time, I’m assuming the agent had actually accidentally pointed me towards the Senator lounge. The other possibility is that the lounge simply has different access policies at different times of day. Reviewing this lounge means that I’ve now covered all the business class lounge options at Zurich Airport.

I got to the entrance by going up a level from where the A gates were, as the two lounges share an entrance (I didn’t actually take a picture of the entrance, though here’s one from my previous visit).

Review: Cathay Pacific The Wing First Class Lounge Hong Kong

We decided to set out for the airport at around 2:30, which was around 3 hours prior to our flight to Mumbai. We took an UberBlack to the Airport Express Station located in the International Finance Center at Hong Kong. The ride cost us $50 HKD ($6.45 USD) which is similar to what a taxi would cost us, except this ride was in a Tesla Model S.

The Airport Express is the most convenient and efficient way to get from the city center to the Airport. Costing just $100 ($12.9 USD) per person per way, it’s a real deal, considering that a taxi would usually cost upwards of $400.

One caveat regards arriving at the D gates is that the entire plane had to go through customs. I’m not sure why that is, but it was a long and drawn-out process, where we had to do the usual, and also take off our boots, which wasn’t something we had to do anywhere else on the trip. While it wasn’t much of an inconvenience for us, as we were transiting anyway, I’m not too sure how the people leaving from Zurich Airport thought of it.

I saw signage for the Swiss D lounge, and asked my mom if I could quickly snap a few pictures before I went over to the A side. She obliged, and I was on my way. I followed the signage which led up to an empty hallway, with the Swiss D lounge at the very end of the hallway.
