This is a trip report that I hope isn’t going to take too long. It consisted of a short trip to Japan in business class, because…why not?

In all seriousness, Osaka (and nearby cities, such as Kyoto and Nara) has always been at the top of our to-travel list, and the only place that I’ve been to that my sister hasn’t. Easter was the best time to do this – no transits, no kerfuffle, no longhauls, perfect if I needed to catch up on some work, right?

Not so – prices back then were over the roof. Business class prices were out of the question at HK$25,000, premium economy was out for our dates and economy was extra pricey at HK$9,000.

Thankfully, I found a package in time that would cost ~HK$16,000 per person for a seat and a hotel room, which was pretty good compared to what else I was seeing. ANA was out of the question – their flight timings were terrible, which I value on shorthauls.

This allowed me to sample Cathay Pacific’s business class products on the A330 and the 777-300ER.

While I was hoping for extra time in a reverse herringbone seat, we did end up having an equipment swap on the return to a regional 777-300, which was bad for my parents and good for another trip report on them.

The final flight itinerary was follows:

CX 596 08:00 – 12:25 HKG – KIX 333 J
CX 507 18:00 – 20:55 KIX – HKG 773 J

In terms of the hotels, the first two nights were covered in a deluxe room at the InterContinental Osaka as part of the rate.

However, things got complicated when we couldn’t book for four people to fit in one of these rooms for the other three nights. While we originally booked a Two Bedroom Superior Residence, under some changes we upgraded ourselves at a discount rate to the Two Bedroom Deluxe Residence.

Bottom Line

Overall, it was a fun trip that will sure make an interesting report – stay tuned! By the way, this was the first (and only) trip taken with my father’s Fujifilm X10, as I’ve gotten an even better one for my birthday. I’m happy that I used the camera, as the quality’s much better than what comes out of my iPhone 5.
