Review: Hong Kong Wu Kwai Sha YMCA Self Service Hotel

Every year during January I have some work to do up at northern Hong Kong, and all the functions happen at the YMCA campsite, which features a hotel and some bungalows. It’s a good place to shut off from the rest of the world and be productive on what you’re doing, so great.

I arrived the hotel at seven in the morning, and since my friends had checked in the night before, I had immediate access to my room.

I was located in Block F, which is the block featuring general dormitories (basically – suites).

The lobby was “first time at camp” style with tiled floors and a tacky blue couch on each side. There was a TV, which some of us hung out and watched at night.

There was also a meeting room which you can request in advance, though we didn’t use it this time.

Of course, we weren’t the only inhabitants.

I went up the stairs to my room on the second floor.

The hallways were reasonably decorated for a dormitory.

Room Number: F201

The cabin was decorated, finished to exactly suit a dormitory; it did its job for what it was. The living room featured a little pantry with storage, a sink and a communal table.

The room featured a TV which, while served no purpose to us, was appreciated.

The communal tables featured wood chairs.

The two bedrooms were similarly themed. They were…colourful.

The bedrooms featured a double bed each and a single bed. They were all hard as rock with leather mattresses, but they did the trick.

There were some defects, for sure.

The views from the bedroom and the living room were nothing special, but we didn’t spend much time in the dorms anyway.

There were power ports near the walls which were appreciated.

The bathroom was similarly coloured. It featured a sink, a toilet and a walk-in shower.

The shower water leaked into the bathroom.

Over the room was sufficient for my stay, and really, I was happy. The dorms were mostly clean, which was appreciated.

The food was…edible.

In terms of the grounds, there are halls, barbecue pits, tennis courts, and many other ways to spend time, so I was (literally) a happy camper.

Bottom line

Should I be “not happy” about the hotel? No. It was just a place for lodging where we got to focus on work.

But would I be there for a vacation? Hell no.
